Hi, my name is Lorna Yakopo and am trying to trace my Rotuman side. Daughter or

John Yakopo Jnr and grand-daughter of John Yakopo Snr also spelt (Iakopo) his also

known as John Rock&Roll !! My grandfather has one brother named Aisake & sister Tonu as far as i know Nana Tonu married a Montu and they resided in Nabua, Fiji. All of which have now passed away so would appreciate any additional information at this stage.

 Am trying to find out if i have relatives out there that may be able to give a history

of my family or anyone that can point me in the right direction?

I know im from Malhaha just not too sure exactly which village in that District.

 I would love to visit Rotuma one day soon but want to learn more about where my family is from before i decide to go.

Funeral Notice

Desmond Versoni Arpana Michael 13 September 1927 – 21 September 2009 

Mr. Desmond Versoni Michael passed away peacefully at his residence at Mendhi Place, Waiyavi. Lautoka yesterday.

He is survived by his loving wife Ravai, children - Wilson and Jane Michael, Henry and Meriama Michael, John and Geraldine Michael, and Seforosa and Ralph Carroll, and grandchildren – Seforosa, Fatiaki, Luise, Sera, Amoe, Isireli, Jayde, Trae, Natasha, Ebony, Jayde and Sarah.

It is proposed that the condolence gathering will be held at 4 Mendhi place Lautoka on Friday 25^th September 2009. It is expected that the funeral service will be held on Saturday at 10:00 am at the El Elohe Methodist Church in Lautoka, and burial at the Tavakubu cemetery following the service.

Confirmation of the tentative funeral arrangements will be announced later.

One special flower for this day is the Easter Lily.
It's color is white, and yet snowy & milky.

CONGRATULATIONS to Anselm and Leah Fatiaki of Craigmore on the birth of their son Tamiana John, delivered at the Lyell McEwin Hospital, Saturday 07/03/2009. Mum and son doing well with Dad over the moon. New grand parents Seforana and Jane of Canberra were here for the birth and are so wrapped with the birth of their mapiga. Mapiga Trae's First Haircut_09/02/2009

Trae Isireli Bera's first haircut was performed at their home at Parafireld Gardens, SA_09/02/2009. this was attended to by close family and friends and saw the traditional seating, the origins of this culture, the blessings and finally the celebration. this ancient tradition, symbolises a future of good health and happy living. Trae is the first child of Isireli and Jade. an evening enjoyed by all present.

Farewell to Luise Michael_09/02/2009

a farewell dinner was hosted by isireli and jade to farewell their sister and sister-in-law, luise as she embarks on a european-us tour that will take her away from home for the best part of the year. luise graduated with a bachelors degree in journalism from unisa in 2008 and has decided to travel the world and hopefully gain experience in those travels. the dinner was attended by close family and friends and included the venables and michaels of adelaide. it was hard to say good-bye but we all wish her well and a spirit filled journey. take care and God Bless...luise leaves for the UK 10/02/2009

Lou and Eddie Riedel stopped over in Adelaide and paid us a visit. It was great to have them here and to reminisce the good old Lautoka days of the ‘70’s and ‘80’s over an Aussie bbq. This was the final leg of their Aussie holiday which have taken them to Tasmania, Canberra, Adelaide and back home to Perth. To you both, thanks for the good times, have a safe journey home and hanisif to the boys.

Peofa Tigarea of Marist Brothers High School shows the style which saw him win the discus and break the record in the junior grade. ROTUMA lad Peofa Tigarea made a huge first impression as he broke a record and won gold for Marist Brothers High School in the junior boy's discus yesterday. The Form Four student hurled a distance of 47.70 metres to eclipse the record set by Kasiano Raturaga also of MBHS in 1999. It stood at 47.58m. "There was a lot of pressure," Tigarea said. "I knew that competition was tough and I didn't expect to go for the record as I just wanted to win. I am very pleased." He said the feeling within the Reds camp was that they needed to make amends early on day two if they were to try and win the overall title. MBHS lost out on most of its medal events on the first day. Hailing from Losa in Rotuma, the youngster was making his debut in the event. "It's a great feeling," he said. "I would like to thank my parents and coach Albert Miller, Solo and Gus who all were my strength." Joeli Nagera of Suva Grammar School was second with a distance of 44.55 metres while Natabua High School's Nicholas Khan won bronze with a throw of 43.60m.

Ravai & Desmond of Lautoka, Fj recently made a three month trip to Aussieland, spending their first month with their son and daughter-in-law, John, Geraldine and mapigas, Tash, Ebony and Jade.

 We had the opportunity to catch up with them during their month long (Oct) stay with the Michaels of Adelaide. It was fantastic to catch up and reminisce the old days and a pleasure to show them the sights of this great SA state. A hapagsu and vakamamaca traditionals were performed for their great grand son Trae Isireli and it was such a blessing that they were here for these events.

It was also a great day as we blended the two cultures (Rotuma and Fiji), a day enjoyed by those who attended.

Fai’ akse’ea se Douglasi ma on konohoagta for taking time out from their busy schedule to entertain our Lautokans, of which they are so grateful for.

It was sad to see them go, as they made the next leg of their journey to Sydney to spend time with their daughter and son-in-law, Rev Seforosa, Ralph and mapiga Sarah Carrol.

Dear friends

A group of dedicated Rotumans have formed a committee of men and women in Brisbane to raise funds for much needed repairs to the Catholic Churches in both Sumi and Upu, Rotuma in FIJI. 

Together with many thousands of Rotuman children, several members of this group were fortunate enough to have received much of their schooling and Christian education through the Catholic Schools in Sumi and Upu and they now wish to repay in some small way, their debt of gratitude.

We have taken up the challenge to raise funds and have now planned an Island Night which is to be held on Saturday September 27 in Brisbane (details in attachment).   This is a one-off fundraiser, therefore to make this event the success it deserves to be, we rely on the goodwill and generosity of individuals and companies and we hope to get the support of all Rotumans living in Australia and abroad.

We welcome the buying of tickets by tables of 14 and individual buyers are more than welcome where we place you with lovely people.

The Michaels (Adelaide & Queanbeyan) recently made a trip back to Lautoka in celebration of Desmond and Ravai’s milestone achievements (06/10/2007). This was held at the Sofitel, Nadi after a moving church service at the El Elohe Rotuman Methodist Church, Lautoka. The service was conducted by Rev Vivalesi Simote, MC at the Sofitel, Dr John Fatiaki and Vote of Thanks by former CJ Dan Fatiaki. The function itself was a beautiful occasion enjoyed by all who attended and brought back memories of yesteryear. A heartfelt fãiåk se’ea to my brothers Wilson (Suva), John (Queanbeyan), Aisake Tigarea (Suva),  sisters Rev Seforosa Carol (Syd), Ravai O’Connor (Suva) and their families for making this celebration one of thanksgiving, love and memorable for Mum and Dad.
